In 2024, the total number of reported crimes decreased by 1.7%, with 5.837 million cases reported compared to 5.940 million in 2023. This decline, however, does not necessarily reflect an increase in public safety, as the part-legalization of cannabis has removed a significant number of drug-related offenses from police records.
Understanding the Crime DataDespite the overall decrease in crime, violent crime has reached alarming levels, with an increase of 1.5% resulting in 217,277 cases, marking a new high. Notably, assaults involving knives increased by over 10%, with 29,014 recorded incidents. Crimes categorized under murder, manslaughter, and assistance in suicide also saw a slight uptick, while robbery offenses declined by 3.7%.
Surge in Sexual OffensesOne of the most alarming trends is the marked increase in sexual offenses, which rose by 9.3%. This translates to 13,320 reported cases of rape and sexual coercion, compared to 12,186 in the previous year. Over the past five years, such offenses have surged by 41.3%, raising significant concerns regarding public safety.
