2024 Germany: 41% Increase in Rape and Sexual Coercion in Last Five Years.

In 2024, the total number of reported crimes decreased by 1.7%, with 5.837 million cases reported compared to 5.940 million in 2023. This decline, however, does not necessarily reflect an increase in public safety, as the part-legalization of cannabis has removed a significant number of drug-related offenses from police records.

Understanding the Crime Data

Violent Crimes on the Rise

Despite the overall decrease in crime, violent crime has reached alarming levels, with an increase of 1.5% resulting in 217,277 cases, marking a new high. Notably, assaults involving knives increased by over 10%, with 29,014 recorded incidents. Crimes categorized under murder, manslaughter, and assistance in suicide also saw a slight uptick, while robbery offenses declined by 3.7%.

Surge in Sexual Offenses

One of the most alarming trends is the marked increase in sexual offenses, which rose by 9.3%. This translates to 13,320 reported cases of rape and sexual coercion, compared to 12,186 in the previous year. Over the past five years, such offenses have surged by 41.3%, raising significant concerns regarding public safety.
