WHO Investigation of COVID in China in 2020

Yes — according to reporting from Newsweek about the WHO-China Joint Mission in early 2020, two **American experts were part of the mission team but were not allowed to visit Wuhan itself during that trip:

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Americans on the mission who didn’t go to Wuhan

  • Clifford Lane — Clinical Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). He was on the WHO-China Joint Mission but did not travel to Wuhan; instead he was on the Guangdong team.

  • Weigong (W.) Zhou — Medical officer at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Zhou also did not go to Wuhan and was on the Sichuan team.

Newsweek noted that only three non-Chinese experts actually visited Wuhan during the February mission, and none of them were American, which President Donald Trump criticized in a letter to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The three international experts who did visit Wuhan were:

  • Bruce Aylward — Senior adviser to the Director-General of WHO

  • Chikwe Ihekweazu — Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control

  • Tim Eckmanns — Robert Koch Institute (Germany)

🧠 Why they didn’t go

According to the reporting:

  • WHO said it was “logistically difficult for a large group to go” into Wuhan at that stage.

  • The Americans received briefing from the colleagues who did go.
