Senseless Crimes -- August 2025

Rashad Dabney III, 28, appeared in court, charged with two counts of capital murder — murder during a kidnapping and murder during a robbery.  Investigators believe Schnuelle, a 59-year-old retired veterinarian and professor at Alabama’s Auburn University, was ambushed by a stranger Saturday morning.

The mom was then dragged several hundred feet off the main path into a wooded area, where she was stabbed multiple times, WRBL reported, citing arrest warrants. Her dog was found unharmed near her body.  Evidence directly tied Dabney to the crime scene, according to the report, which did not elaborate.

The killer took Schnuelle’s keys and drove off in her red Ford F-150, which was later found abandoned in a creek bed less than five miles from Kiesel Park, the documents said.

A career criminal with six violent arrests was released from jail, and weeks later, he raped a 4-year-old child and gave her a sexually transmitted disease.  Anthony Jelks, 25, was “well known” to Baton Rouge police because he has a history of violent arrests going back several years.  Just weeks after being released from prison after his most recent arrest, Anthony Jelks is accused of raping a little girl and giving her an STD.

19-year-old Prince George’s County resident Dacara Thompson was confirmed dead and her accused killer appeared in court Monday.  The Lanham resident left her father’s home the night of Aug. 22, said she was going to put gas in her car and never returned.

Thompson’s parents frantically searched for their daughter for two weeks. Then a nude body was discovered off Route 50 in Anne Arundel County on Aug. 31. Prince George’s County police confirmed on Friday that the body police found was Thompson’s, and they said Hugo Hernandez-Mendez, 35, was charged with murder.  Hernandez-Mendez was held without bond.  He was living in the U.S. illegally, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.  Hernandez-Mendez was arrested by U.S. Park Police months ago. He was stopped on April 25 on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway near Annapolis Road for suspected DUI. The federal government released him pending trial, Prince George's County officials said. It was unclear why he was not detained by ICE, which Thompson's mother said could have made a difference in the case.  “It’s very disappointing, finding that out now. We may not be here today if they did what they were supposed to do," she said.
