The gallery was originally designed to glorify the reign of Louis XIV nicknamed the Sun King. It served as a setting for royal ceremonies and remains one of the finest examples of Baroque art in France. The ceiling, decorated with mythological scenes, celebrates the power of Apollo, "god of the sun, in an allegory of the monarch's reign".
