CNN initially reported the Saturday assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump as if the former president had merely fallen off a stage – a characterization that swiftly earned condemnation from conservative lawmakers and those commenting on social media.

"Secret Service rushes Trump off stage after he falls at rally," CNN's headline read shortly after news broke that there was possible gunfire at a Pennsylvania Trump rally. 

The headline angered conservative lawmakers, as well as others on social media, who described the headline as "conscious deception" and "disgraceful."

LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman found himself in hot water Sunday following the assassination attempt on Donald Trump over prior comments he made wishing that the former president was an “actual martyr.” 

The Democratic super-donor, in a post on X, tried to clean up the inflammatory remarks he made last week while telling the audience at the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference that he and fellow tech entrepreneur Peter Thiel had a falling out due to a “moral issue” — Thiel’s backing of Trump, according to a Friday report in Puck News.

Thiel, who was in the audience at the panel, spoke up and sarcastically thanked thanked Hoffman for putting money behind lawsuits against Trump, saying that the legal action had turned the 45th president into “martyr.

Yeah, I wish I had made him an actual martyr,” Hoffman reportedly replied.

July 13:  Educated, we’ll-to-do claiming that the shooting was staged

A leading Democrat fundraiser and political strategist is apologizing after he emailed journalists Saturday night to suggest the attempted assassination of former President Trump may have been "staged."

Semafor reported that Dmitri Mehlhorn, the top political adviser to billionaire LinkedIn co-founder and Democrat mega-donor Reid Hoffman, sent an email Saturday night to a group of journalists after the incident and wrote that one "possibility – which feels horrific and alien and absurd in America, but is quite common globally – is that this 'shooting' was encouraged and maybe even staged so Trump could get the photos and benefit from the backlash."

Marsaw is the president and vice president of a local NAACP in Natchez, She has since deleted the post and her account, but screenshots have been reposted across social media. In a follow up post, she said: 'That's what your hate speech got you!!' 

Jacqueline Marsaw wrote that the shooting – which killed one rally attendee and critically wounded two others – “couldn’t [have] happened to a nicer fellow,” though she insisted that it was a “staged” incident.
