1. The mayor of Dolton, Illinois passionately defended her lavish spending habits on travel and dining Monday, claiming her critics are attacking her status as a Black woman in "power."
“Y’all got false narratives out there and y’all should be ashamed of y’all self,” Tiffany Henyard told village board members at a meeting. “Y’all are Black. Y’all are Black. And y'all are sitting up here beating and attacking on a Black woman that’s in power.”
Henyard has spent high amounts on travel at the expense of taxpayers, WGN reported, dropping a combined $67,000 on trips to Atlanta, New York, Portland and Austin. Many of her trips were reportedly first class.
The mayor also takes advantage of a deep security detail, taking police officers off Dolton streets to serve as her personal entourage, FOX32 Chicago wrote. The officers would reportedly accumulate hundreds of working hours in a pay period, costing taxpayers extra in overtime costs.
The spending comes as Dolton faces a debt of $5 million, trustee Jason House said at Monday's meeting. Dolton officials reportedly now face concerns of public works vehicles being repossessed, streetlight electricity shortages and water main breaks.
“At the end of the day, vendors are not being paid,” House said. “The items taken out of the departments is the overtime. That's because the overtime is being spent in ways that it shouldn’t.
Besides the alleged frivolous spending, Henyard sparked outrage over a controversial salary plan she successfully proposed for Thornton Township, which critics claim was a strategy to discourage anyone from running against her.
Henyard, who collectively earns a $285,000 salary from her two positions, proposed a nearly 90% cut to her salary if someone else wins her spot in the next election, Fox 32 reported. However, if Henyard is re-elected, her salary would remain the same.

2. Not as Flashy
According to State Auditor Shad White, Bertha Thomas was charged with three counts of embezzlement. She’s accused of embezzling tax disbursements issued to the town by the Bolivar County Tax Collector. Thomas was served with a $12,573.42 demand letter at the time of her arrest.
