Consequences So Light that Crime Pays Bigtime

Lori Argiro-DiPietro allegedly swindled $473,000 over the course of a decade as a clerk at Brooklyn Supreme Court, according to a court transcript obtained by The Post.  The theft was uncovered during an audit. She worked for the court system for 37 years before she was fired in August 2022, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office said.

Argiro, who bought a three-bedroom home in the Richmond section of Staten Island in 2011 for $407,000, changed her plea to guilty during a Sept. 6 court appearance, where she paid back the $69,515.50 she was originally charged with taking and was sent to jail on Rikers Island pending her sentencing next week, the transcript shows.  That’s also when Brooklyn prosecutors revealed the amount Argiro-DiPietro is accused of stealing was much larger than they had originally contended.  Prosecutors had sought a six month jail sentence, plus five years probation for Argiro-DiPietro — and said they may pursue the rest of the stolen funds by going after her in civil court or taking her pension.

But Judge Danny Chun expects to dole out a much lighter punishment, he told the disgraced clerk, “given your lack of criminal record, the fact that you are willing to plead guilty early on and admit or take responsibility by admitting to your crime and the fact that you did provide some restitution in the amount of $69,515.”

So she gets $400,000 and essentially no penalty.  Don't understand the judges.
