A Sensible Proposal for Timing of Presidential Primaries Among the States

Since they have the first caucus and primary, the state of Iowa and New Hampshire which are not representative of the country have a disproportionate affect on the presidential candidates.

"In late 2022, the Democratic Nation Committee’s rule-making committee voted to put South Carolina in the number one slot, then have New Hampshire and Nevada go together a week later, followed by Georgia and Michigan. All five of these proposed primary elections would be held in February 2024. Iowa would be pushed down the calendar.

The proposed change reflects the reality of the 21st-century Democratic Party: Its voters are diverse. Donna Brazile, probably the most prominent DNC member, reminded her colleagues of that, and the fact that it’s about damned time the party as a whole recognized that and started paying some attention to those voters."

The early caucus/primary wins do seem to make a big difference on how candidates do down the line.  Perhaps having several states hold primaries on the first date would limit the concentrated gadhanding on a few issues of interest to the voters in the initial state.  Having several states hold their primaries on the first date would limit the extent to which the candidates could curry favor with a few voters.  Rotating the first date among the states would further limit the power of voters in a few states.

Hopefully the Republicans will follow suit.
