Nearly two dozen CEOs signed the letter to Congress asking for support as theft crimes rage, including the chiefs of Target, Nordstrom, Levi Strauss, Ulta Beauty and Home Depot.
Black Lives Matter led the charge last year in rallying Americans to support defunding the police. Co-founder Patrisse Cullors said that the way "we actually get real accountability and justice" is through the "demand of defunding law enforcement."
As is well-known, the short-sighted and naive often assume that when public policy changes those affected will not change their behavior. Nordstrom and other companies simply couldn't move fast enough to signal their 'virtue' by supporting BLM and defunding the police without ever thinking how the criminal element might respond.
Keep in mind that strong, sincere support for equity, fairness, and inclusion and for responsible policing does not necessitate denigrating all police and supporting police defunding. Indeed, Nordstrom could have said that they supported many of the goals of BLM and would provide some funding but that they did not support BLM's stand on law enforcement.
